Harmonia's Cheri Ruben, Ph.D., ABMP presents at New York State Psychological Association Virtual Convention
Cherie B. Ruben, Ph.D., ABMP, Licensed Clinical Psychologist at Harmonia Collaborative Care presented "Earning the Right to Prescribe - Psychology’s Evolving Scope of Practice" at the New York State Psychological Association Virtual Convention on October 16, 2021.
"Clinical psychopharmacology is now an APA professionally recognized specialty field dedicated to the study and therapeutic use of psychotropic medications, in addition to traditional psychological interventions, for the treatment of mental disorders and promotion of overall patient health and well-being," shared Dr. Ruben. In this session attendees learned more about the postdoctoral training psychologists need to obtain if they chose to prescribe in the growing number of states with this expanded scope of practice and how getting prescription privileges for psychologists can improve health care.
Dr. Ruben is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist who received her BA from Columbia University (summa cum laude) in 1987 and her PhD from Syracuse University in 1992. She received psychopharmacology training from Prescribing Psychologists' Register during the early days of the prescriptive privilege movement (prior to the development of the MSCP programs). In 2007 she became board certified in Medical Psychology via the American Board of Medical Psychology. She is mid-way through a 3-year term as Member-At-Large for Division 55 of APA. She has been on the NYSPA RxP Committee for several years. In addition to being a past-president of PAWNY (2002-2003) and their long-standing Social Chair, she was given two awards from PAWNY (Distinguished Service Award in 2006 and the President's Award in 2018).
