Laura Spencer, PhD, LMHC

Director of Mental Health Clinics

I am the Director of Mental Health Clinics. I have my PhD in Counselor Education and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor. I am trained in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Narcissistic Abuse, Solution Focused Therapy (SFT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI). I provide parent training and treat mood and anxiety disorders. I enjoy working with people to help them recognize and attain “where they wish to be”. It honors me to be on the receiving end of someone sharing their lives. I have the opportunity to learn more about what shapes us as a community, and I treasure that greatly. At Harmonia, “Life. With Balance.” is not only our slogan but how we emphasize our model for work – work is important, but taking care of ourselves in other areas only makes us better in our work. I find my balance in my family and friends; both two legged and four legged. Spending time in green space, cooking big meals and exploring the world, near and far are also important to me. Our world is not a perfect place, but it is truly interesting and full of endless fun things to discover.

My focus has been on building intentional communities and delivering excellence in program and project management. Harmonia has a strong culture of communication and understanding. Being able to build accessible programming and support which enriches the lives of students and families is very rewarding. I love being of service to the community! Nature, being outside and creating art move my soul. Learning, reading, thinking, meditating and exercising bring me joy. I frequently and humbly remind myself that “balance” is a constant negotiation.

Clinician

I am a Licensed Master of Social Work. I received my MSW from the University at Buffalo. I specialize in trauma-informed approaches and trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Seeking Safety, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Koru Mindfulness approaches. I am a member of the Council on Social Work Education. I believe survivors of violence and trauma deserve a system that is responsive to and appropriate for their needs. Learning how to connect with these clients, and working with them to alleviate their trauma symptoms is my life’s work. Harmonia’s emphasis on holistic wellness for clients and clinicians alike is what I most enjoy. It is so important to take care of ourselves so we can give our best to those we serve! I find my balance listening to music and singing. Sometimes I sing in choirs, but I’m known to break into song in my day-to-day life. I most appreciate the indie-folk movement but appreciate a wide variety of music genres from Motown to alternative. I love attending concerts and listening to live music!

Clinician

I am a Licensed Master of Social Work trained through the University at Buffalo School of Social Work. I also received my 200-hour yoga teaching certification through the Himalayan Institute of Buffalo and I specialize in utilizing mindfulness and the mind-body connection in the therapeutic context. Before getting my master’s, I worked for several years as a mental health technician for BryLin Hospital, providing social and emotional support to people suffering with serious mental illness. I enjoy working at Harmonia because the staff really cares about clients and we collaborate to best serve their needs between the mental health clinic, Health Home Department, and Senior Services. We have so many resources to get our clients closer to where they want to be. I love social work because I believe that connecting genuinely is one of the most powerful and impactful things any of us can do. I have the honor to witness people finding and developing their strengths; which I find to be a gift. I find my balance through spending time outside, with family, friends, and pets; through meditation, dancing, and making music.

Being a part of a shared community of therapists which support staff is a value to working at Harmonia. We complement each other in our roles of assisting others.
